Conques

June 20, 2009

Mum is staying with us at the moment and has a great interest in Medieval churches, particularly French churches.  As we were driving down from collecting her the other day she asked if we had ever been to Conques.

Been?  No.  Heard of it?  Sadly no.  We were obviously very lacking in local knowledge, or very parochial as this village is the ‘far side’ of Figeac in the Aveyron – foreign territory to us adopted Lotois!

So we set off this morning to see what was there.

It is the most amazing village, so pretty and amid the most beautiful countryside.  It is a port of call on one of the the pilgrim routes of St Jacques de Compostella,  there are several which converge around here.

You can look at the links to see more details but here are just a few photographs to whet your appetites.

Strolling with friends

June 8, 2009

Last night we had a lovely supper with friends.  Before we ate we went for a stroll round their village and, just for a change, I had remembered to take the camera with me!

He stopped the traffic

June 1, 2009

Picture the scene.  A quiet town in France on a Saturday.  The locals were going about their Saturday tasks, shopping, stopping occasionally for a handshake, two kisses on the cheek, maybe taking a coffee.

Suddenly a tiny yellow car roars past.  People stop, stare, they don’t think they have seen one like this before.

The driver likes the attention.

He puts his foot down producing a little more throatiness to the engine and roars along the main street.

There is a cheer behind him and he smiles to himself before realising that they are calling to him that his suitcase has fallen off the back of the car……
